Renewing an LEI held by an Indian entity

An LEI has to be renewed every year to stay in ISSUED status. If the date passes, the code is marked LAPSED in the global database. For Indian companies this tends to surface at the bank: lenders and payment systems that check LEI status can flag a lapsed code at facility review or on a large RTGS payment, and a treasury team then has to fix it under time pressure.

Renewal keeps the same 20-character code. We check the record against the current MCA master data, update anything that has changed, such as a new registered office after a shift between states or a change of name, and re-certify it for another year. A multi-year plan covers future renewals in advance, so one lapse in an annual reminder does not cost you.

Worth checking before renewal

  • Company status on MCA21 is Active. Strike-off or amalgamation affects the LEI record.
  • Registered office and legal name still match the MCA master data
  • Parent entity details after any acquisition, merger or demerger

LEI renewal questions in India

Our LEI was issued by LEIL. Can we renew it here?

Yes. Start a transfer, and the renewal is handled as part of it. The code stays the same, and your bank does not need to update its records.

How early can we renew?

You can renew from about two months before the next renewal date without shortening the following year.

Our company was amalgamated into another. Should we renew the old LEI?

No. When a company ceases to exist after amalgamation, its LEI should be retired with the reason recorded, and the surviving company keeps or obtains its own LEI.
