Your LEI Code in India, Sorted in 24 Hours

An LEI code — short for Legal Entity Identifier — is the worldwide standard for identifying participants in financial markets. In India, RBI, SEBI and IRDAI directions make it necessary for bank borrowing, large-value and cross-border payments, taking part in markets, and listed debt.

Who needs an LEI in India, and how to get one

In India the push for LEIs comes from the Reserve Bank of India rather than from securities law. RBI has phased the code in market by market, and Indian businesses usually meet it in one of these places:

The first is the bank. Under RBI directions, non-individual borrowers with large aggregate exposure to banks need an LEI, and lenders ask for it at sanction or renewal of credit facilities. The second is payments: RTGS and NEFT transactions of ₹50 crore and above by non-individuals carry the remitter and beneficiary LEI. The third is markets. LEIs are required for participants in OTC derivatives, for cross-border capital and debt transactions of ₹50 crore and above, and for issuers of non-convertible securities, commercial paper and certificates of deposit.

An Indian company or LLP is verified against the Ministry of Corporate Affairs register. We match your CIN or LLPIN, legal name and registered office to the MCA master data and confirm that the applicant can act for the entity. Trusts, societies and partnership firms that are not on MCA21 are verified from their deed or registration certificate instead.

Keep these ready

  • CIN (21 characters) for a company, or LLPIN (e.g. AAA-1234) for an LLP
  • Registered office address as it appears in the MCA master data
  • Name and designation of the applicant: director, designated partner, company secretary or authorised signatory
  • Board resolution or authority letter, if the applicant is not a director or partner
  • Details of the ultimate and direct parent, if the entity is consolidated into a group

LEI registration questions from Indian businesses

My bank asked for an LEI. Is that a legal requirement?

Banks apply RBI directions that require an LEI from non-individual borrowers above set exposure thresholds. Below those thresholds a bank may still ask for one as part of its own onboarding policy. Either way, the LEI you get here satisfies the request.

Does RBI accept an LEI that was not issued by LEIL?

Yes. Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd is one accredited issuer, but RBI accepts an LEI from any issuer accredited by GLEIF. All LEIs sit in the same global database and look the same to your bank.

Can a proprietorship firm get an LEI?

A sole proprietorship is not a separate legal entity, so it is usually not eligible. Partnership firms, LLPs, companies, trusts and societies are.

What happens if the MCA record shows a different address?

The LEI record must match the official register. If the address changed recently, file the change with MCA first. If the filing is in progress, tell us and we will hold the application until the master data is updated.

Do I need an LEI for each group company?

Yes. Each legal entity has its own LEI. Groups can register several entities together through the bulk order option.
